 Building Our Future Together

The OMSA Board of Directors is pleased to share that construction activity for our new school is expected to begin before the end of 2026, barring delays caused by weather or other unforeseen circumstances.

Responsible Planning for Our New School

Over the past year, the OMSA Board of Directors has worked diligently to secure responsible financing for construction on land purchased for our new campus. The process has brought progress, challenges, and valuable lessons.

The Board has met weekly—and often more frequently—to evaluate the best path forward for a project estimated at approximately $22 million. We take this long-term responsibility seriously and remain committed to conservative, frugal stewardship. Construction will proceed in phases to protect OMSA’s financial stability and avoid placing the full burden on one generation of families.

Recognizing Those Who Help Move the Vision Forward

We are deeply grateful to everyone who has worked alongside us. We first recognize our foundational builders—the individuals and families who have consistently supported the OMSA Gala and contributed financially to make this vision possible. We appreciate you and welcome others to join this dedicated group of Firebird supporters.

One OMSA parent, Eric Locklear has given generously of his time, providing school-design guidance and helping translate our educational priorities into a facility that supports effective teaching and learning. We also thank his employer for supporting his involvement, hosting collaborations, and helping others understand the possibilities for our new campus. We will share additional updates throughout the school year.

We also thank the professional and community partners who have assisted with the land purchase, permitting, wetlands preparation, and other critical processes.

We are especially grateful for our partnerships with UNCP administrators, departments, and programs. They have responded to our space needs while engaging our Firebirds in innovative academics, place-based learning, and joyful campus experiences. This partnership carries forward the vision of UNCP’s seven original American Indian trustees in 1887: John L. Lowrie, Alfred P. Swett, William B. Jacobs, W. H. Brayboy, J. M. Oxendine, W. L. Moore, and Noah Locklear. We can only imagine their pride in seeing their vision continue through a new generation. The OMSA Board of Directors remains deeply grateful for the foundation they laid and the path they opened as we continue their work by serving our community and advancing educational excellence.

We thank LaRonda Lowry for revitalizing OMSA’s Advisory Board and engaging parents in our continued pursuit of educational excellence. We also recognize our Dean, administrators, faculty, staff, and support personnel, whose daily service keeps OMSA focused on student learning and well-being.
